Competition in Mathematical Modeling OverviewThe MCM contest atSLU this yearContact informationfor interested students OverviewThe Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications, COMAP, annually conducts MathematicalCompetition in Modeling MCM for teams of undergraduate collegestudents. Historically, this contest takes place in earlyFebruary. Teams are expected to use mathematics much as professionals usemathematics on problems that originate in variety of otherdisciplines and are only indirectly related to standard textbookproblems. This contest does have great value for the mathematicaleducation of the participating students. It also providesexceptionaleducation value for time management skills, teamwork skills andtechnical writing skills. COMAP also conducts similarInterdisciplinary Contest in Modeling ICM over the sameweekend.

David Jackson, if your areinterested in participating in the MCM. He has much more materialavailable in his office for interestedstudents, including copies of some of the outstanding reportsprepared by student teams in some earlier years. Please stop byhis office at your convenience if you are interested inseeing or borrowing some of these materials. As in the past, the Arts and Sciences dean and the Parks College deanhave been very supportive about paying the registration fees. This fee is one of several reasons that we expect all members ofregistered MCMICM teams to be committed to an intense weekend ofteamwork. SLU Links The MCMcontest at SLU this year Three member teams of college students will receive two mathematicalmodeling questions at on 14, 2008.They will choose one of these two questions to solve and complete awritten report explaining and analyzing their solution of this problemby on 18. Under the contest rules, four MCM teams can represent Saint LouisUniversity, but only two teams from any one department. SaintLouis University can also enter three ICM teams. Hopefully,we will recruit two but only two teams that would be mathematicsdepartment teams.
